Stories from the Borders – Greece 2009 – 2015

"Stories from the Borders" brings together several photographic series by Stephanos Mangriotis exploring borders and migration in Greece. From the state of transit in Patras to the fragmented lake of Prespa, from xenophobia in Athens to the detention centres along the edges of Fortress Europe, these works address elusive realities: borders are not merely static lines; they shift, move, and evolve, leaving their mark on bodies, walls, and collective memory.

Standing simultaneously as a gateway and a fortified outpost of the EU, Greece lies at the heart of current events. Through six years of research along these borderlands alongside the people who live and cross them, these series offer a reflective step back to observe the same territory. The images and stories bear witness to the absurdity and cruelty of these barriers—both physical and deeply intimate.
